This thesis analyses the consequences of resettlement for children's education based on a case study in Ahmedabad, India. Urban renewal through large scale projects is common practice and often involves the resettlement of the initial inhabitors. However, the compensation they receive doesn't cover the losses they experience and previous case studies indicate that the majority of the affected people is further impoverished by these development projects. This thesis argues that the consequences of resettlement are of a broader nature than financial compensation. The case study of Ahmedabad shows that less quantifiable assets such as education are strongly affected in direct and indirect ways. This suggests that a livelihoods perspective, sustained by a thorough understanding of the local context, is necessary to fully understand and account for the negative consequences of resettlement.
