dc.description.abstract | Abstract
The objective of this study was to obtain data on the prevalence of the intestinal parasites Cystoisospora canis and Toxocara canis in adult dogs in different regions of the Netherlands. An attempt was made to find a correlation between potential risk factors and the shedding of oöcyst and eggs in the feces of these dogs.
Between june the 6th and the 9th of September 2011, 135 feacal samles were collected from household-, shelter- and huntingdogs in the region of Utrecht and The Hague. None of which were positive for C. canis and a total of 3 were positive for T. canis, giving us a local prevalence of 0% (BI) and 2.22% (BI) respectively.
Because of the small sample size, no correlation could be found between the prevalences and risk factors such as walking off-leash, catching prey, eating of the ground and eating raw meat. The expectation that in a partially dewormed population the prevalence of C. canis would be higher than T. canis, didn’t come true.
Follow-up research will be necessary to gain enough data to make significant statements. | |
