Winter tick (Dermacentor albipictus) densities were determent on 27 moose hides by dissolving quadrants of 100 cm2 in potassium hydroxide solution. Two hides were found positive on the presence of winter ticks. Moose 1003 had most ticks on sample area’s A, B, C and D (neck, hump and shoulder). Moose 42 had most ticks on sample area E (base of the tail). Winter ticks were found to be most numerous near the spinal column in these sample area’s. The instar present on Moose 1003 are nymphs and a few engorged nymphs while on Moose 42 only a few engorged larvae were present. This difference can be explained by the time of year these moose were collected. Moose 1003 was collected in the winter of 2010 which corresponds with the life stage of the ticks. This is the time nymphs are starting to feed on the host and are becoming engorged. Moose 42 was collected in the fall of 2010 when larvae are feeding on the moose before they molt into nymphs. This research is part of a three year Master Theses. Outside the scope of this research Moose 1003 came from the area called Tulita, while Moose 42 came from the area called Deline. Before this study there have been no reports of winter ticks in the Deline area.
