dc.description.abstract | Objective: The object of this study was to determine the effect of the quality of the sibling relationship
and parenting behavior on problem behavior of 4- to 6-year old children. Differences between gender
combinations and between mothers and fathers in parenting behavior are also examined in this study.
Method: In a cross-sectional design, parents were asked to fill out questionnaires about their children
aged 4 to 6 years about the sibling relationship and problem behavior. A total of 180 parents, with an
average age of 37.28 participated. Results: A significant positive effect was found of psychological
control as well as of conflict on externalizing problem behavior. Regarding psychological control, a
significant positive effect on conflict in the sibling relationship was found. The effect of psychological
control and conflict on externalizing problem behavior does not differ significantly between gender
type of parents or sibling gender combinations. Conclusion: The main conclusion is that there is an
effect of conflict in the sibling relationship and parental psychological control on externalizing
problems for 4- to 6-year old children. There is no difference in this effect for gender combinations or
gender type of parents. | |
