Toekomstvisies van kinderen in favelas in Rio de Janeiro

Abstract

In de favelas van Rio de Janeiro leven kinderen in een context van armoede, geweld en maatschappelijke en sociale uitsluiting. De gezinnen hebben een lage sociaaleconomische status en bevinden zich in een lage sociale klasse. Echter gaan de meeste kinderen nu naar school, wat zou betekenen dat zij via educatie een uitzicht hebben op geschoold werk en hierdoor een verbetering van de sociaaleconomische status en wellicht ook sociale klasse. In dit onderzoek zijn factoren onderzocht die invloed hebben op de toekomstvisies die deze kinderen hebben, die enerzijds leven in een achterstandssituatie, maar wel onderwijs genieten. Er zijn in totaal 21 kinderen in de leeftijd van 8 tot 11 jaar oud geïnterviewd, woonachtig in de favelas Parque Vila Nova en Vila Ideal. Er is gebleken dat kinderen beroepen aspireren met een hoog opleidingsniveau, hoger dan het opleidingsniveau van hun ouders. Ondanks dat de kinderen zich voornamelijk identificeerden met hun ouders en hen als inspiratie noemen voor hun toekomst, is er geen verband gevonden tussen de beroepsaspiraties van kinderen en de beroepen van de ouders, zowel qua niveau als het beroep zelf. Daarnaast is gebleken dat de kinderen de wens hebben om de sociale klasse te ontstijgen. Ze omschreven hun toekomst als een leven met bepaalde kenmerken dat getypeerd kan worden als het leven van de huidige middenklasse. Zij zien onderwijs als hét middel om dit doel te bereiken. Hun lage sociaaleconomische status lijkt hen te motiveren om te hard werken naar en aan een goede toekomst.

Abstract In the favelas of Rio de Janeiro kids live in a context of poverty, voilence and civil and social exclusion. The families who live there have a low socialeconomic status and find themselves in a low social class. However, nowadays the most children go to school, what suggests that via education, these children have a prospect on having jobs on the level of skilled work, and because of this an improvement of their socioeconomic status and perhaps also social class. In this research factors were examined which have an influence on the future prospects that the children have, children who at the one hand live in a disadvantaged situation, but do go to school. In total 21 interviews were held with children in the age of 8 to 11 years old, which live in the favelas Parque Vila Nova and Vila Ideal. Results show that children have occupational aspirations which require a high level of education, higher than the level of education of their parents. Although the children mainly identified themselves with their parents en named them as their source of inspiration for their future, no relation was found between the occupational aspirations of the children and the jobs of their parents, neither the level of the job as the job itself. The children also had the desire to transcend their social class. They described their futures as lifes with certain characteristics that are typical for the life of the current middle class. They view education as most important souce to attain these goals. Their low socioeconomic status seems to motivate them to work hard for a good future.
