This study is about women’s empowerment in Doornkop, Soweto, South Africa. It studies the effect of the Child Support Grant on the empowerment of women and the influence of human and social capital on this process. The results show that the Child Support Grant did not contribute to empowerment in general, but that it contributed to financial empowerment. Women who received a CSG and had a higher income were better able to survive financially.
