dc.description.abstractAim: This study focuses on the relation between the background of two Dutch boarding institutes and their views on social development of deaf children from 1980 till 1990. Methods: The following two institutes were compared: the public Guyot Instituut in Groningen (1790) and the Catholic Instituut voor Doven in St. Michielsgestel (1840). These two institutes were selected because they differ in their background. The data that were analysed have been retrieved from magazines and school reports. For the analysis, the Grounded Theory was used. Results: The results show that the view of the institutes is best represented by their views on different subjects that are interwoven in the concept of social development. These subjects consist of: integration, communication, environment, social skills and self-image. Conclusion: The views of the institute show differences but also similarities. The differences between the institutes cannot only be explained by the background of the institutes. Many other factors can contribute to these differences.
