The objective of this thesis is to identify the text-type specific problems translators encounter when translating scientific texts. To enable such an analysis, this thesis first provides an interpretative framework by giving a brief outline of the history of science and scientific texts and the history of Dutch and English, after which the textual characteristics of scientific texts are discussed, as well as the translation problems they might entail. This thesis shows that translation problems are mainly caused by differences in linguistic and rhetorical conventions between source and target cultures, which is why scientific translators should make sure that the are aware of the linguistic and rhetorical differences between: general Dutch and scientific Dutch; general English and scientific English; general Dutch and general English; scientific Dutch and scientific English; whereby ‘scientific’ also refers to the differences within the scientific genre (i.e. the differences between the research-article, popular-science and textbook text types).
