Aert Mijtens (1556-1601): a painter from Brussels in Naples and the Spanish Viceroyalty between 1575 - 1600

Within the field of research dealing with international artistic exchange, the case of Aert Mijtens is of particular interest. Together with a handful of other Northern artists, he managed to establish himself as a painter in Naples and the Spanish Viceroyalty (i.e. the South Italian territory under Habsburg rule). Mijtens' success was large enough to grant him a comprehensive and extremely laudatory Life in the ‘Schilder-boeck’ by Carel van Mander (1604), the first collection of artist biographies on Netherlandish artists. The question that I will try to answer is: Which factors in Neapolitan society between 1575-1600 made it possible for Aert Mijtens to work successfully as a foreign artist in Naples and the Spanish Viceroyalty? Chapter One is a biography of Aert Mijtens, Chapter Two deals with the different political, religious and cultural aspects of Neapolitan society between 1575-1600 that were possibly of influence on Mijtens’ success and Chapter Three consists of a catalogue raisonnée of Mijtens’ oeuvre.
