Checking out basic word order in Cantonese

Abstract

It is shown that Cantonese basic word order corresponds to the way VO languages behave like Koster (1999)'s theory of Collective and Individual Checking predicts it does. An explanation is given why a more precise classification of adverbs needs to be made and a proposal offered for such a classification.
