The present study examined the associations between parenting and adolescent school grades, while giving attention to ethnic differences. The relation between parenting and school grades where examined in two different samples of adolescents, living in the Netherlands, who completed questionnaires at school. Study 1 included 314 adolescents (M age about 14 year), mainly attending lower secondary education. Study 2 included 23 adolescents (13-15 years old) from Utrecht (The Netherlands), all attending secondary education. Analyses showed that neither Study 1 nor Study 2 found ethnic differences in the patterns of associations between parenting and school results. Authoritarian parenting tended to have a negative impact on school grades and authoritative parenting was positively associated with school grades. The implications of these findings are discussed.
