This thesis analyzes Maxine Hong Kingston’s autobiographical The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of a Girlhood Among Ghosts. Central to this book is the feeling of dividedness that stems from a double cultural heritage. Through reinventing the autobiography, Kingston reconciles the traditional Chinese collective identity of her immigrant parents with the individualism of American society.
