This retrospective case series is set up to get a better understanding of the differences between type 1 and 2 disc degeneration and the value of clinical signs, histology, radiology and MRI in diagnosing canine intervertebral disc disease. Although the significance of this study is limited, a few conclusions were drawn: Dogs with type 1 disc degeneration seem to have worse clinical signs than dogs with type 2 degeneration; both radiographic and MRI appearances do not always correspond to the histological degeneration; neurological signs do not always correspond to degeneration on radiography, MRI and histology. Therefore, more research remains to be done into diagnosing canine intervertebral disc degeneration.
