        Summary
This thesis argues that Rortyan philosophy offers a philosophical framework that can be used by modern theology in its speaking on God. Rorty's rejection of absolute truth and his critique on religion links up with the uncertainty regarding God's existence and speaking about God in modernity. However, many characteristics of Rorty's speaking on truth and religion can be found in more orthodox theology as well. This thesis illustrates how Rortyan philosophy can offer modern theology a good philosophical starting point, because Rortyan philosophy illustrates how to speak about truth in a world of uncertainties, and because many characteristics of Rortyan philosophy are familiar both to modern man and to traditional theology.
