Background: A lot of research is done about the relationships between negative parenting behavior and externalizing behavior problems of adolescents and between parental stress and externalizing behavior problems. Aim: To examine whether negative parenting is a mediating factor in the relationship between paternal stress and externalizing behavior problems and the differences between boys and girls using a proportional stratified sample of 468 nonclinical school-aged children. Research includes only fathers due to little empirical research that includes fathers. Results: Results of analyses for mediated moderation shows that that negative parenting mediates the relationship between parental stress and externalizing problem behavior. This is a partially mediation because direct effects are also significant. Moreover, the associations appear to be similar for boys and girls. Conclusion: This research gives a clearer insight on de question why children of stressed parents show more externalizing problem behavior. Parental stress and negative parenting must be attended to in the approach of and treatment of externalizing behavior.
