        Summary
Abstract Background: Recently much research has been conducted concerning math problems and dyscalculia. This has resulted in a better understanding of the causes, characteristics and the best treatment for these problems and disorders. Although there are measuring instruments to determine if a young child is suffering from an arithmetic disorder, it is important to develop an instrument to identify problems at an early stage of development. Moreover, there seems to be little interest in the knowledge that parents have with regard to their children, while most of the time they can be a source of valuable information. Aim: Due to this research an existing questionnaire was refined to allow a measuring instrument to identify math problems in young children. The ultimate goal of this research is to develop a reliable parent-questionnaire to provide information about their child. Method: To develop the questionnaire scientific literature and the conclusions and recommendations of the research to the previous questionnaire was used. Furthermore 40 files of children diagnosed with dyscalculia were analyzed. Additionally, the new questionnaire was completed by parents of 10 children (4 boys and 6 girls with a mean age of 6.8 years) to answer the question whether the questionnaire allows reliable data collection. Results: The new version of the questionnaire, the OSR 2008, seems to be clear and understandable for the parents. They were able to answer all the questions in contrast to the earlier version of the questionnaire. Conclusion: The OSR 2008 is an measuring instrument that can be used to identify math problems in an early stage. Further research is needed to determine the validity and reliability of the questionnaire.
