Into the Wild : the Role of the Forest in Sir Orfeo, Sir Perceval of Galles and Ywain and Gawain

In the Middle English verse romances, the forest is usually a place of adventure and testing. However, the role of the forests in Sir Orfeo, Sir Perceval of Galles and Ywain and Gawain differs from the stereotype. Through close-reading analyses, this thesis will examine the role(s) of the forests in these three romances and determine in which way it differs from the standard role of the romance forest.
