        Summary
In this study the relationship is investigated between three intellectual abilities of Guilfords Structure-of-Intellect model and reading competence at sentence and text level, for second-grade high school students of HAVO/VWO level. From earlier research it is known that intellectual abilities like Cognitive Meaning Transformations (CMT), Cognitive Meaningful Units (CMU) and Memory of Meaningful Transformation (MMT) are related to reading competence at text level for primary school children and high school students of MAVO level. In this study the results of 260 second-grade HAVO/VWO students (134 boys, 126 girls) were analyzed. At text level, CMT and MMT are better predictors for reading competence than CMU. At sentence level, CMU is the best predictor for reading competence. The sentences investigated are garden-path sentences and subject-object / object-subject sentences.
