        Summary
        This article explores how expectations of tutorial communication are perceived at an United World College and an independent private school in South Africa. It is argued that tutors and tutees do have the same ideas on what tutorship implies, namely helping, assisting, intervening and counselling. However, this does not mean tutees always act according to these mutual expectations. Furthermore, explanatory suggestions and some pointers for practice are offered.
