        Summary
This thesis analyses the way in which women are portrayed in Jack Kerouac's 1957 novel On the Road. It applies several important concepts in feminist theory such as patriarchy and the male gaze to the novel, focusing on how they work with regard to the way the male protagonists treat the women they meet on their travels across America.
